- /kəriən ˈwɔ/ (say kuhreeuhn 'waw)
a war, 1950–53, fought between North Korea supported by Communist China, and South Korea supported by the United Nations.
The Korean War broke out in 1950, when Communist North Korea invaded pro-American South Korea, and, at the instigation of US President Truman, the UN decided to intervene. Fifteen nations took part in the US-led force, including Australia, which sent army, navy and air force units to Korea. Truman feared that North Korea's attack might be a prelude to a military move against Western Europe by Stalin, and the war triggered first Western and then Soviet rearmament. Having checked the North Korean armies, the US's drive to reunify Korea brought China into the war, and the armistice of 1953 left North and South holding much the same territory as before. During the war 339 Australians were killed and more than 1000 injured.
